“Zoo Atlanta is an Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredited zoological park in Atlanta, Georgia. The current President and CEO of Zoo Atlanta is Raymond B. King. The Atlanta zoo suffered neglect and by 1984, was ranked among the ten worst zoos in the United States. Systematic reform by 2000 put it on the list of the ten best.” Wikipedia
If you have been following my journies you have no doubt realized I love zoos. So, of course, I had to visit Zoo Atlanta.
Aiming to beat any crowds, my nephew, his two teenaged children, and I arrived early on a brisk November, Sunday morning. Crowding was never a problem as we toured the zoo for almost three hours. The zoo is not overly large in area and has a very nice collection of animals from all around the world. I enjoy seeing animals that you don’t see at some other zoos, so at Zoo Atlanta I enjoyed the Giant Pandas, the Warthogs, the Silverback Gorillas, and the Oragutans.
When scheduling visits to zoos in the past I have tried to steer clear of high temperatures because animals, like people, don’t enjoy the heat and are usually inactive trying to stay cool. Today I discovered the inactivity can happen when the temerature is too cool, as some animals huddled together trying to stay warm.
Overall, I enjoyed Zoo Atlanta, but, possibly because of the cool temperature, I wasn’t wowed by it. Next time I’m in Atlanta I will give the zoo another chance to impress me.
