WINGS OVER THE ROCKIES AIR & SPACE MUSEUM
7711 E Academy Blvd, Denver, CO 80230
“The Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum is located on the former Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado, United States. The museum preserves the history of Lowry AFB's operations from 1938 to 1994 in its collections, archives, and research library.” - Wikipedia
When I was planning my destinations in Denver, this museum was not on my radar. But then I was given a 5-site City Pass with Wings Over the Rockies as one of my choices; it fit into my schedule, so I decided to check it out.
The museum’s collection is housed in one large hangar on the former Air Force Base. There were aircraft and land vehicles of all shapes and sizes and included some non-military craft as well. Each exhibit had an informational sign giving facts and anecdotal snippets, which I enjoyed reading. There were planes designed, built, and tested in Colorado. Some were successful, others were not. There were other exhibits around the hangar such as the Colorado Aviation Hall of Fame, Aviation Uniforms, Model Airplanes, and a room dedicated to the Colorado Air National Guard.
I have been to other air and space museums around the country. Many have been so big that I lose interest, but I thought this museum was the right size and was a delightful stop.
Wings Over the Rockies
B-52
Kitty Hawk Flyer, manufactured in 2016 and 2017. Runs on rechargeable batteries, and can take off and land like a helicopter from land or water. One does not need a pilot license to operate.
Jetwing - designed by the Ball Corporation President O.E. "Pete" Bartoe.
Skyote. Also designed by Bartoe. Designed to be an aerobatic aircraft and its structure was stressed to 9 Gs positive and 6 Gs negative.
Cessna U-3A. A civilian model similar to this aircraft was used in the late 50s television show "Sky King," which I loved to watch as a kid.
HL-20 "Dream Chaser" - scheduled to provide a minimum of 6 missions to the International Space Station in late 2020.
Alouette III
B1-A Lancer
Mark 36 Thermonuclear Bomb
Sonic Arrow designed by racing legend Craig Breedlove. Purchased by Steve Fossett in 2006 who spent two years modifying the car to break the 800 mph barrier. Sadly, Fossett was killed in a plane crash in 2007, and the car never made a try at the record.
Star Wars Incom T-65 X-Wing Starfighter. Built by Lucasfilm to promote the re-release of the first three movies.
Part of the display honoring the many NASA astronauts that called Colorado home.
F-4 Phantom
UH-1 Huey
B-18 Bolo Bomber
