SUNKEN GARDENS

2600 D Street, Lincoln, NE 68502

“The Sunken Gardens was constructed during the winter of 1930-31 in Lincoln, Nebraska. It is the only garden in Nebraska listed in the National Geographic Guide to Public Gardens 300 Best Gardens to Visit in the United States and Canada.” - Wikipedia

My friend, Nancy Fulton, suggested I visit the Sunken Gardens, and I am so glad I followed her advice.  Formerly a neighborhood dumpsite, this 1.5 acres was first developed in 1930, and was transformed into an iconic feature of Lincoln.

Even though the gardens had been hit with frost a couple times in the past week, there was enough color left to indicate that this is a beautiful, peaceful oasis during spring and summer.  The concrete and pea gravel paths wind their way past a wide assortment of annual and perennial flowers, bronze sculptures and two lily ponds.  While busy streets border two sides of the garden, the sunken nature provide a tranquil spot to enjoy the beauty.

I really want to return in the spring or summer sometime.
