PIERRE, SOUTH DAKOTA

“Pierre is the capital city of South Dakota and the seat of Hughes County. The population was 14,091 at the 2020 census, making it the second-least populous state capital in the United States, following Montpelier, Vermont. It is the eighth-most populous city in South Dakota.” Wikipedia

My initial travel plans had me skipping South Dakota’s capitol city on this trip, however, an adjustment was made so I could spend some time with a friend and her family who were spending Labor Day Weekend camping in Pierre. The schedule adjustment was well worth it.

I spent Friday touring the State Capitol building and the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Museum (see other posts). I spent Saturday on the Missouri River with my friend and her family. They fished while I took pictures and got sun burned. On Sunday I joined friends from Minneapolis who ventured to Pierre for a weekend get-away. We took a long hike followed by socializing and doing a little gambling, ending the evening with a wonderful dinner at a Pierre Italian restaurant.

It was a wonderful weekend.
