PARTHENON
2500 West End Ave, Nashville, TN 37203
“The Parthenon in Centennial Park, Nashville, Tennessee, is a full-scale replica of the original Parthenon in Athens. It was designed by architect William Crawford Smith and built in 1897 as part of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition.” - Wikipedia
Nashville’s Parthenon is a pretty impressive building outside and inside. The pediments on each end of the building are truly great works of art. Inside there are two floors. The first floor contains four galleries, and the second floor is a replica of the Parthenon interior complete with the tallest indoor statue in the Western Hemisphere. The art in the first floor’s Cowan Gallery was donated to the city of Nashville by James Montgomery Cowan in 1927 with the stipulation that it be permanently housed in the Parthenon. On the second floor the statue of Athena dominates the area. Sculpted by Alan LeQuire between 1982 and 1990, the statue stands 41’10” tall. The statue of Nike in her right hand is 6’4” tall.
