HAMANN ROSE GARDEN

27th and C Street, Lincoln, NE 68502

“Established in the 1940s, this garden was chosen as Nebraska’s first test garden and observed how 200 roses would survive in the local climate. In 1986 roses were proclaimed the Nation’s Flower, and we are proud to honor the flower by giving the rose a proper home in Lincoln. Throughout it’s (sic) decades of design, the garden has remained dedicated to providing an educational display of roses best suited for the region.

The Lincoln Parks Foundation, the Lincoln Rose Society, and the City of Lincoln's Parks & Recreation Department, led the $350,000 campaign to renovate and restore Lincoln's only municipal rose garden in 2006. A generous donation from Don Hamann, owner of Sartor Hamann Jewelers, and an avid rose grower, helped kick this campaign off. The renovation was completed in 2008 and transformed the existing garden into two gardens: a formal display garden of cutting roses and an informal strolling garden of hardy landscape roses.

Hamann Rose Garden showcases many varieties of Hybrid Tea Roses, Floribundas, Grandifloras and mini roses in a formal setting of boxwood hedges, hardy perennials, shrubs, and evergreens.  The garden features updated furnishings, ornamental lighting, a fountain, sculptural elements, public art pieces, and a pavilion at the south entrance.” – Lincoln Parks & Recreation Website

Across the street from the Sunken Gardens (and next to the Children’s Zoo), I pretty much discovered this garden by accident.  As with the Sunken Gardens, the frosts of the past week have caused a lot of the flowers to wilt, but it doesn’t take much imagination to know how beautiful this garden is during spring and summer.  I also enjoyed all the butterflies in the Pollinator Habitat and the fountain in the middle of the garden.

If visiting the Sunken Gardens one needs to cross the street and visit the Hamann Rose Garden also.
