THE DALI MUSEUM

1 Dali Blvd, St. Petersburg, FL 33701

“The Salvador Dalí Museum is an art museum in St. Petersburg, Florida, United States, dedicated to the works of Salvador Dalí. It is located on the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront by 5th Avenue Southeast, Bay Shore Drive, and Dan Wheldon Way.” Wikipedia

I first visited the Dali Museum in about 1999 and loved his work, so when I knew I was going to be in the area I put a return trip part of my itinerary. A new building, which is a piece of art in itself, has housed the collection since 2011. Having already seen the collection I thought this might be a quick stop, but I still spent about 2.5 hours here.

I downloaded the museum’s free cell phone app. The app greatly enhanced my visit. Dali’s surrealistic works are very involved, and without the app I would have missed several of the intricate details of the works. The app also has an Augmented Reality (AR) feature where you hold the phone up in front of certain works and the art work comes to life. Very Cool! If you have some time, you can download the app yourself and use it to hear descriptions of some of the pictures below, plus the AR feature works on the pictures too.

A special exhibit of the work of Lee Miller, a photographer and photojournalist. Miller was a fashion model in New York City in the ‘20s, before going to Paris where she honed her photography skills. The photographs in the exhibit included ones of Miller taken by others, some by her former husband Man Ray, and photos Miller took of her social friends, including several of Pablo Picasso.

If I get to the St. Petersburg area again, the Dali Museum will difinitely be on my itinerary.
